Craigslist

Apparently, a man is accused of having killed a woman (Julyssa Brisman) who he met through craiglist.

"Friends and acquaintances of Philip Markoff, a medical student accused of killing a woman he may have met through a Craigslist online ad, described the 23-year-old as a model student." (...)

According to the story being said, it is believed that the motive in Jennifer Brisman's death was robbery. Besides this, the man is also being charged in connection with a robbery of a woman in Boston. It is said that the woman made arrangements to meet a man through craiglist but ended up being robbed.

It surprises me how many agree on meeting people that they find through craiglist. This website if not used correclty can be incredibly dangerous. Such is the example of the women above. There are many people posting the weirdest things on the site.

I remember being back at home in summer and reading a post, while searching for new apartments, of a man who was looking for a woman who could cook and take care of him to which in return he would give her a room in his apartment for free.
I wonder how many people actually believed that his offer was completely normal and tried to contact him.

There are just so many dangerous people surfing the web, setting up meetings, taking advantage of a tool for communication for the wrong reasons. There have been so many reports of scam and fraud  and stories about people meeting through craiglist and being found dead.

It is true that people are aware of the risks of answering ads posted anywhere. People have been aware of this since they were published for first time in newspaper, however how do we ever know which ones to pay attention to and which ones to ignore?

Stories like this only remind me that even the brightest people can fall victims of evil 'predators', and that evil can wear the most innocuous expression. You can never judge a book by its cover. This expression is such a cliché but suits perfectly to the situation. Evil can come packaged behind people you would never expect to be so.

No one is ever truly prepared.
